When the beat starts to pound at the Rose and Crown, don’t be surprised to find yourself rapt by the high-energy sounds of SubCity Dwellers.
“As opposed to most ska-punk bands, we try to focus on older influences. Have it be old-school soul, reggae or punk, we make sure to go for a more authentic sound, while still keeping it fresh,” says SubCity vocalist and guitarist Ian Lodewyks.
With eight members in the band, each brings their own unique style, which is what sets them apart as an original sound.
“It’s always about pushing the envelope,” he says.
While their first CD, Out On the Streets, is more “unique ska-punk”, it demonstrates the band discovering their flavour.

Their second CD, When the Beat Starts to Pound, keeps to their original sound, but plays with more variety.
“We use that developed sound as a base for the soup, to which we add reggae, dancehall, rock and roll, calypso and soul. The energy is still the same, but the sound goes way beyond.”
The band has recently purchased a bus and has made touring their number one priority.
By next year, they hope to continue touring Canada, visit Europe, as well as, play at the sixth Annual Tribute to Joe Strummer & The Clash.
But most of all, the band looks forward to playing music together “for the sake of making new music and inspiring/connecting” with listeners.
The Winnipeg band will be playing at the Rose and Crown on May 11to 12 to promote the release of their second CD.
“SubCity has played Banff multiple times already. Always at the Rose & Crown as they treat us great and the crowds there love to dance to live music, which is what we’re there for.” says Lodewyks.
