Terry's legacy 0
Running, walking or riding, Banff's Terry Fox Run wants you.
The 32nd annual Terry Fox Run takes place this Sunday and everyone is encouraged to come out, donate what you can, and participate to help raise money and awareness for cancer research.
Local organizer Becky Champion said no amount is too small, and the more people in the run the better. Banff's annual, non-competitive run generally has between 75 and 100 people take part, and last year it raised $10,000 for cancer research.
"That's fantastic for a small community because it speaks to the generosity of people in Banff," she said. "There's so many things people donate their time and money to, I feel so great people still choose to make Terry Fox a part of their lives.
"And there's no minimum donation. If you want to stop by and give me a toonie, that's fantastic."
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the shelters at the Rec Grounds, but pledge forms can be downloaded from terryfox.org. The run starts at 10 a.m. and will follow the same route as last year, going from the Rec Grounds across the bridge and along the river before looping back once you hit the canoe docks. Participants are welcome to do shorter routes. Champion said the event is very casual about the length of the race.
"It's whatever you're able to do, what you'd like to do and what you want to accomplish that day," she said.
Despite its casual nature, it's held each year to raise money for a very serious disease. To date, $600 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research in Terry Fox's name, and 84 cents of every dollar donated on race day goes to cancer research.
"I don't know if I've ever met anyone that didn't have a family member or friend that has had cancer," Champion said. "It's a scary thought."
Champion herself has lost friends to the disease, and watched both her parents battle different forms of cancer. It's part of the reason why she continues to volunteer to help organize the local run.
"We just have to keep fighting and putting the money towards research," she said.
"We're still fighting the battle Terry started 32 years ago."
